Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years 1984 to 1992
October 1, 2012 at 5:00PM

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of Audre Lorde’s passing, the acclaimed Black lesbian feminist poet and activist. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Lorde’s incisive writings and speeches defined and inspired the women of color, feminist and LGBT social justice movements in the United States.  Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 explores a little-known chapter of the writer’s prolific life, a period in which she helped ignite the Afro-German Movement and made lasting contributions to the German political and cultural scene before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German reunification.

Schultze Gets the Blues
October 2, 2012 at 4:30PM

This Schultze finds himself forced into retirement from the salt mines of Germany. Ensconced in his boring free time, Schultze flicks on the radio only to have his world revitalized by the sound of Zydeco music. He picks up his accordion and a new genre is born as he travels from German music festivals to the American southwest in this tale of the magic a new passion can unleash.  (Horst Krause, Harald Warmbrunn, Karl Fred Muller, Ursula Schucht, Paramount Classics; Directed by Michael Schorr, Rated PG; 114 minutes; 2004; in German with English subtitles. Poster of Schulze Gets the Blues and synoposis information courtesy of Swank Motion Pictures.

Live Music: Az1

Live Music: Az1

Location: Upper Alabama Street

Az1 (pronounced “as one”) is one of Atlanta’s hottest up and coming female R&B groups. Often compared to a unique blend of Destiny’s Child and TLC, the group formed as a unit in the fall of 2004. Their solid vocals and lively stage performances demonstrated a maturity that few artists rarely achieve in an entire career. These young ladies take extreme pride in being able to sing “LIVE.” No singing over lead tracks or lip-synching allowed here. Their most notable performances include a television appearance on Fox 5's Good Day Atlanta and the 2006 Essence Music Festival in Houston, TX. The hard work has paid off and members of Az1 have quickly made a name for themselves. While performing live is their first love, they also place a heavy emphasis on their academics. In line with promoting teen literacy, these young ladies are the prime example of doing what it takes to stay focused on your books while working to achieve their dreams. They have continued to work diligently in the studio on their music. Look out for their latest release, "Let's Dance!". It's going to be HOT! Look out for The Az1 Experience on a Billboard top 100 chart in the near future.

Mr. Friday Art Exhibition

Mr. Friday Art Exhibition

Location: The Exchange Building @ Underground Atlanta/50 Central Avenue

ArtWays presents, an installation of 37 drawings by artist, MisterFriday that takes small talk, the act of polite and uncontroversial conversation and turns it on its head.  In works that range from simple line drawings to detailed portraiture each work is embedded with contemplative and sometimes humorous text to generate meaningful discussion about topics such as student loans, violence, hunger, sexism and death.

In works that range from simple line drawings to detailed portraiture, each work is embedded with contemplative and sometimes humorous text to generate meaningful discussion about topics such as student loans, violence, hunger feminism, oppression and death.

Where the act of small talk serves as a function to establish personal space, viewers are invited through the use of a magnifying glass to get up close and personal to view running commentary or to simply appreciate the dynamic creations on a purely aesthetic level.

MisterFriday, a graduate of SCAD, believes that size does matter, “My work is about intimacy. I feel the bigger the piece, the more you lose control over the one-on-one personal affect you have with the viewer.”  The size of the work and the sometimes cryptic nature of the text entice viewers to decipher the text and discover their own interpretations.

Getting tested is the first step to finding out if you have HIV. If you have HIV, getting medical care and taking medicines regularly helps you live a longer, healthier life and also lowers the chances of passing HIV on to others.

Student Film Mixer & Panel Discussion

Student Film Mixer & Panel Discussion

Location: 70 Upper Alabama Street

Come join us and meet the cast and crew of The Games That Children Play! This event is a fundraiser and open to the public. Attendees will engaged in a panel discussion with the cast and the crew. Also there will be games, free giveaways, lite refreshments and cocktails. This film project, however, is a work in progress, and everyone one is learning as they go. Initially, in addition to their cast and crew working with a limited compensation, Dominique and Shaundraey thought they would be able to handle or front the necessary costs that making the film requires, but along with several fund-raising efforts, they have nearly depleted their personal savings in order to continue the making of the film. Although they have raised some money, it is not enough due to several unexpected changes: changing locations for filming, equipment purchases, etc. We have put together a talented group of local artists, and they have agreed to make this film a success; and the entire cast and crew have done great thus far with making their dream a reality; and the generous donations from others will only contribute to the total success of the making of The Games that Children Play.

"The Games that Children Play" is an independent film about a young lady, Rae. Ever since she was a child, Rae has had dreams while sleeping, and these dreams eventually come true…. All grown up now, recently Rae has been having reoccurring dreams about her friends as children playing the childhood game, "Ring around the Rosy." Meanwhile, Rae has an adopted brother, Ryan, who has gone on a retreat for the weekend, and she gets a weird feeling that he has not returned; and so she calls him, but the phone goes straight to voice mail. Rae becomes suspicious and drives to his house to make sure he is all right. When Rae arrives, she notices that the house is in disarray and makes a phone call to Ms. Anna, Ryan’s maid…. Rae hears the door bell ringing. She opens the door, and the person standing there is in a bloody mess and he is serenely singing a song from Rae’s childhood. The guy hands her an invitation inviting her and some friends to an all-inclusive, paid weekend to the mountains. Once Rae and her friends arrive… the games that children play begins… and those reoccurring dreams just may become a reality.

Dominique Williams was born in Oakland, California, and Shaundraey Carmichael was born in Atlanta, Georgia. They met while attending North Atlanta High School of the Performing Arts in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2011, SBA Productions, owned by Dominique, and SEC Film Productions, owned by Shaundraey, were established; Dominique and Shaundraey have both collaborated on various projects over the past year. Their passion for writing, producing, and directing also takes them into the local community where they help talented youth, teens, and adults express themselves creatively in the film industry. Dominique and Shaundraey currently live and work in Atlanta, Georgia.
